  • About The Role

  • The RFFS Training Manager will oversee the CAP 699 BHX Fire & Rescue Maintenance of Competence (MOC) training programme and support the wider Birmingham Airport Learning & Development framework. Based at the Fire Station, this role also provides operational cover to enable supervisory and management teams to undertake developmental training, including short‑notice cover when required.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide operational cover to release personnel for developmental training across RFFS and wider business needs.
    • Deliver contingency operational shift cover (days/nights) for Watch and Station Manager roles when required.
    • Oversee the CAP 699 MOC training programme to ensure full regulatory compliance.
    • Conduct MOC training audits and maintain accurate training documentation.
    • Develop and maintain lesson plans, presentations, and risk assessments.
    • Deliver and assess whole‑crew training scenarios, including theoretical and desktop exercises.

    Additional Duties

    • Drive continuous improvement of the BHX Fire & Rescue MOC programme in line with CAA regulatory changes and industry best practice.
    • Support multi‑agency emergency planning exercises, including Category 1 interoperability training.
    • Liaise with CAA inspectors during annual audits.
    • Maintain competency to CAA RFFS Supervisor level.
    • Oversee serviceability and maintenance of all RFFS training resources.
    • Undertake departmental projects as required.
    • Perform other duties aligned with business needs as directed.

    Experience & Skills Required

    • Ability to work flexibly and provide short‑notice cover.
    • Previous experience at CAA Firefighter level.
    • Ability to work in challenging environments including heat, smoke, darkness, confined spaces, and at height.
    • Strong decision‑making skills under pressure during emergency situations.
    • Mechanical aptitude and ability to work unsupervised.
    • High level of physical fitness suitable for aerobic and anaerobic tasks.

    Qualifications & Certifications (Required)

    • CAA Supervisor Certificate
    • Airside Driver Permits (Airside, Manoeuvring Area, Runway operations)
    • First Aid at Work
    • Level 3 in Education and Training
    • Level 3 Assessor Certificate
    • Eyesight meeting LGV (Group 2) and NFCC standards, including normal colour vision (Ishihara compliant)
    • GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths

    Developmental / Required Qualifications

    • JESIP Commanders Course
    • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
