  • About The Role

  • Reporting to the Baggage Engineering Manager, this role supports the delivery of a safe, reliable, efficient, and cost‑effective Baggage Maintenance service across all Airport Baggage Handling Systems. You will work closely with operational teams and external partners to drive performance, support projects, and deliver continuous improvement aligned with airport objectives. This position includes additional responsibilities beyond the standard Baggage Maintenance Engineer role, acting as the shift representative for the Baggage Maintenance Engineering team.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Act as the shift representative for the Baggage Maintenance Engineering team, serving as the main point of contact for Airport Stakeholders and working collaboratively with Baggage Supervisors to ensure smooth daily operations.
    • Manage engineering breakdowns during shift, including H&S considerations, organising spares, liaising with contractors and supervisors/co‑ordinators, and accurately updating the CMMS.
    • Lead the production of incident reports with Baggage Supervisors/Q&S, identifying root causes and supporting management with planning and delivering remedial or continuous improvement actions.
    • Take an active lead in managing help calls, ensuring inspections are completed in the CMMS, supporting CI initiatives, small projects, shift resource planning, and spare parts stock control.
    • Support management by contributing to safety, security, operational performance, and team meetings to promote open communication and continuous improvement.
    • Mentor new apprentice engineers, supporting their training and apprenticeship requirements, and assist with recruitment activities including interview panels.
    • Become an ID Gateway signatory, managing team pass renewals and arranging temporary passes for contractors.

    Experience Required

    • Ability to work a 24/7 shift pattern (4 on / 4 off, days and nights) with flexibility to meet business needs.
    • Industry‑recognised apprenticeship with Electrical and Mechanical qualifications (minimum NVQ Level 2/3), including 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
    • Experience with current H&S legislation, including writing Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
    • Experience maintaining conveyor systems within automated materials handling, automotive, or FMCG environments.
    • Strong fault‑finding experience and front‑line breakdown response, including working safely with voltages from 24VDC to 415VAC.
    • Experience using a CMMS, following PPM schedules, working with PLCs, reading schematic drawings/O&M manuals, and using Microsoft Word and Excel.
